Frankly speaking, everyone suffers from stage fear when they come onto the stage for the first time. The reason for many to not step onto the stage and they try their best to prevent such situations.
Now what exactly is stage fear? It is basically a kind of fear which is there within you. This restricts you from performing in front of a large gathering. Google defines it as ‘Anxiety and panic caused by the thought of performing’. So please do not worry because it is not a disease and is not at all harmful. It can be minimize by efforts from your side.
There are also many people whose legs start wobbling and hands start trembling when they go onto the stage. These kinds of things happen with many of us but we can call it as phobia or stage fear always. It might happen because of the fear that what would the teacher or my friends think of me. This can easily be reduce by performing more often. In fact this has happened to me too when I went for the first time on the stage. I almost forgot my entire script that I had prepared for delivering in the school assembly. Somehow I did manage because I didn’t want to become a laughing stock.
To conquer it, first of all you have to understand the reason behind going on the stage. What you have to deliver there and please if you have stage fear then do not go without prior preparation. This might create a bad impression in your mind and your fear might increase further. So you have understand to about the topic very well and prepare your script in crisp and just go and deliver out there.
Adding to it, try to not to memorize the script instead try creating your script point wise so if by chance you forget your script then you can remember it through those keywords and do try to look at everyone (audience) while speaking. This would really boost up your confidence and if any of your friend is making any faces or teasing you then try to ignore them and understand one thing that public speaking is not that tough and not that easy too unless you understand the basics and get the confidence of speaking.
Now when I was in my school, I was given a tip by one of my teachers and you also might have heard it, it’s that consider the audience as an idiot and nothing more than that because this creates a mindset within you and you do not get a lot of worried regarding your content or the way you are speaking. This really is the best mantra out there and really helped me a lot in my initial days.
I would also like to say that once the fear of speaking goes off, that is, after you have at least spoken for more than 2-3 times, then do keep on practicing until you master the skills and understand the fact that legs and hands might shiver for the initial starting days but do not worry a lot about it and rather focus on your delivery.
So these were some points which really helped me a lot while performing on stage and I am sure it would help you too, so ALL THE VERY BEST and do let me know about the feedback whether it really helped you or not.
